Why government document portals reject photos that look fine
Indian government document portals run automated checks on uploaded files — dimensions, file size, and format are validated before any human reviews the application. A photo that is 1 pixel off the required dimensions, or 2 KB over the file size limit, triggers an automatic rejection with a generic error message that doesn't tell you which requirement failed.
PAN card is a good example of this: the photo dimensions are landscape (wider than tall), which is the opposite of most ID photos. Applicants who upload a standard portrait photo get a dimension error. The Sarathi driving licence portal is even stricter — it requires exactly 420×525 pixels, not a range, and a 419×525 image will fail even though it looks identical.
These tools output the exact required dimensions with a 2–5 KB buffer below the file size ceiling to account for browser rounding. All processing happens in your browser — your identity documents are never sent to any server.
